Rodeph Sholom’s new High Holy Day prayer book, Mahzor Lev Shalem (which means “full heart”) features the traditional and egalitarian liturgy, modern translations, running commentary, and clear instructions as to the proper “choreography” of the service. It also offers contemporary Israeli and American poetry and prayers, and Hebrew transliterations for every part of the service sung or chanted by the congregation. Published by the Rabbinical Assembly, it is the Conservative movement’s first new mahzor since 1972.
“This mahzor represents the best of the Conservative movement. It is deeply rooted in tradition as well as in contemporary life,” said Rabbi Edward Feld, who served as its chief editor. “We tried to use everyday language, rather than prayer book language, and translations are more literal. We discovered that this generation of congregants wants an honest translation, not a poetic or euphemistic one”.
